The Half Marathon
Saturday brought the 15th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Half Marathon hosted by Donald Duck! This day didn’t start off well as I miscalculated the massive traffic of the largest event of the weekend (The Half) and was still sitting in traffic 30 minutes before the start of the race. However, I prevailed and found myself running (literally) to the start line with 10 minutes to spare! I had intended to run this event with a good friend of mine, Dennis, but was unable to find him in time for the start of the race. Interestingly enough we ended up finishing just minutes apart for the half!
GOOFY RACE TIP: Get to the family reunion area before each race as early as possible. Take the first bus at 3:00AM from your resort hotel or if staying off property leave your hotel room no later than 2:50AM to drive to EPCOT. Leaving even 15-20 minutes later may mean the difference between arriving with time to spare and sprinting from the parking lot to the start line. FYI, from the parking lot to the actual race start line is a minimum of 20 minute walk and up to 45 minutes with the crowd of people. I experienced this the hard way on Saturday…
Sometime between miles 8 and 9 of the half marathon I found two other members of the WDW Radio Running Team, Jeff & Jeff. We ran together the rest fo the way to the finish line keeping a good pace. Whenever I wanted a picture I was able to run up ahead and snap a quick photo in time for them to join me and we would keep running. Then around mile 12 of the half I caught site of another team mate, Jordan. We caught up to him and the four of us went on to cross the finish line together.
